Get Thee To A Nunnery

Students are in the midst of reading Hamlet.  Today, we read Act 3, Scene 1, the To Be or Not To Be speech and the Nunnery scene.  Students have been asked to closely analyze the Nunnery scene in order to determine the nature of Hamlet's and Ophelia's relationship.

After watching Kenneth Branagh's version of the scene, students should consider whether they agree or disagree with this particular take on the scene.  They should then look at different interpretations, take into consideration what they know of characters thus far and draw conclusions.

Hamlet: Pre-Reading

Students used an excerpt from Act 1, Scene 1 of Shakespeare's Hamlet to become familiar with sense units and reading the bard's lines.  Students did a great job of reading and acting.  We gathered lots of information about characters, plot/conflict and atmosphere.

Students jotted down notes on the following questions:

  1. What do you now know about the play?
  2. How do you feel about reading Shakespeare'splay aloud?
  3. What do you think the 'strange eruption' is?

Hamlet Tutorials

The class started tutorials today.  We got through lots of information and had some good/heated discussion.

Students are encouraged to continue to contribute to the discussion.  All students should be aware that they each earn an individual mark, despite working collaboratively.  Come to class ready to present your portion of the task, regardless of what your peers have ready or not.
